muLinux version 14r0 |
|
muLinux is a minimalistic Linux distribution, suitable for old computers. X11, GCC, VNC, SSH, Samba, Netscape etc. are supported on additional addon floppies. It can be installed from DOS/Win9x or Linux, without repartitioning. Paul Zimmer wrote a complete review about it. The "mu" stands for a Greek letter (see Unicode Latin-1 char 0x0b5) frequently used for indicating the millionth part of something. for example: "mu meter" (µm) stands for micro meter and is the one millionth part of a meter. So, the reason for the name "muLinux" is its tiny size.
Release 14r0 is the final release and muLinux itself is not currently under active development.
There are, in muLinux, parts and software components (kernel 2.0.x, kernel modules, bash scripts, etc) written in the year 1998-99 and never changed. Being so old (at the limit of the obsolescence) muLinux can give You a bad (and incorrect) impression about the Free Software, especially if you comes from MS Windows and do not know other Linuxes then this. If this is the case, I apologize for that and suggest You to use a modern, complete and powerfull Linux distribution (Debian, SuSe, etc), in order to evaluate the free software status-of-art, not muLinux.
