Downloading and Installation Instructions, Sun Solaris SPARC-based Machines

The HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2 supports Sun Solaris 2.5 SPARC-based computers.

The HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2 Release includes an updated Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which is the JRE for the Java Development Kit (JDK) 1.1.4 pre-release version. You no longer need to separately download the JDK to run the HotJava Browser.

The HotJava Browser is likely to run on Solaris 2.3 and 2.4, but it has not been tested on these systems.

The HotJava Browser does not run on Solaris 1.x (SunOS 4.x).

The HotJava Browser should run with both CDE and OpenWindows, but only CDE is supported.

The downloading, installing, and configuring process can be broken down into the following steps:

  1. Download the HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2 self-extracting zip file.
  2. Run the HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2 self-extracting zip file.
  3. Run HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2.

Step 1: Download the HotJava 1.1 Beta2 Self-Extracting Zip File

You can download the HotJava Browser binary free for individual, non-commercial use.

The Java Developer Connection is now the resource for downloading early access software. If you haven't yet signed up for the Java Developer Connection, it's free and you can do it now. Once signed up, go to the Early Access section of the JDC web site.

Enter the JDC to Download HotJava 1.1 Beta2

This will take you to a page from which you can download a self-extracting zip file to your computer. You can run the self-extracting zip file by following the instructions below.

Step 2: Run the HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2 Self-Extracting Zip File

After downloading, you can install the HotJava Browser anywhere you like by moving the self-extracting zip file to the location you want the HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2 to be installed and running the self-extracting zip file. To run the self-extracting zip file use the following commands:
   (U.S. and Canada version)
   % chmod +x hjb1_1-beta2-sd
   % hjb1_1-beta2-sd
   -or-
   (global version)
   % chmod +x hjb1_1-beta2-sg 
   % hjb1_1-beta2-sg 
This will create a directory HotJava1.1/ , containing several directories and files, including lib/classes.zip . DO NOT UNZIP THE CLASSES.ZIP FILE. Don't forget to delete the self-extracting zip file once you have unpacked it to save disk space.

The contents of the self-extracting zip file can also be may also be extracted by using the "unzip" command.

Step 3: Run HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2

You can start the HotJava Browser 1.1 Beta2 in two ways:
1. Simply type HotJava1.1/bin/hotjava
-or-
2. Add /(your install location)/HotJava1.1/bin to your path and type hotjava.
